Two former midstate prep standouts were among the players with Tennessee ties chosen Monday during the second day of the Major League Baseball draft.
Murfreesboro’s Drew Beam, a right-handed pitcher, was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the third round (No. 76 overall) and Lewisburg’s Kavares Tears, an outfielder, was drafted by the San Diego Padres with a fourth-round compensatory selection (No. 134).
Each player was part of the Tennessee team that captured the school’s first-ever College World Series title last month.
Other players with state ties chosen Monday were Tennessee pitcher A.J. Causey, who was taken by Kansas City in the fifth round (No. 138 overall); Vanderbilt pitcher Greysen Carter, drafted by the New York Yankees in the fifth round (No. 152 overall); Vanderbilt pitcher Andrew Dutkanych IV, drafted by St. Louis in the seventh round (No. 201 overall); Vanderbilt catcher Davis Diaz, selected by Oakland in the eighth round (No. 226); Tennessee pitcher Aaron Combs, picked by the Chicago White Sox in the eighth round (No. 229 overall); and Vanderbilt pitcher Devin Futrell, selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 10th round (No. 297 overall).
Eight players from Tennessee’s national champion team have been picked in the first two days of the draft, the most of any school in the nation. Six Vanderbilt players have been selected.
Beam, a former Blackman High star, played a pivotal role on the Vols last season, as he posted a 9-2 record and 4.22 ERA, starting two College World Series games. The 6-4, 208-pound Beam tied for the team lead with 19 starts and led the Vols in innings pitched (102-1/3). Opposing hitters batted .259 against Beam, who struck out 99, and allowed 103 hits and 27 walks.
The approximate value for Beam’s selection spot is $1.03 million, per MLB.com.
Tears, a former Columbia Academy standout, had a great final season with the Vols, hitting .324 in 71 games (69 starts). The 6-0, 200-pound Kears was tied for fourth on the team in home runs (20), fourth in RBI (62) and posted a .643 slugging percentage.
The approximate value for Tears’ selection spot is $525,000, per MLB.com.
On Monday, another player with a midstate background, pitcher Chase Burns, was selected with the second overall pick of the draft by the Cincinnati Reds. Burns grew up in Gallatin and starred at Beech High before playing two seasons at the University of Tennessee and one at Wake Forest.
Day Three of the MLB draft, which features rounds 11-20, begins Tuesday at 1 p.m. CT (MLB.com).
