COLUMBIA — Patrick Evans hit a pair of home runs, including a two-run shot that capped a five-run sixth inning as South Carolina broke a 3-3 tie en route to a 12-3 victory over USC Upstate on March 3 at Founders Park.

After the Gamecocks (8-5) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, the Spartans (7-7) came back to tie the game at 3 in the top of the sixth.

In the bottom of the inning, South Carolina’s bats came to life as Evans’ shot to left field made it 8-3.

Logan Sutter added a two-run homer in the seventh and Evans capped the scoring in the eighth with another home to left field.

Evans finished 4 for 5 with two homers and three RBIs, while Luke Yuhasz was 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI. Sutter was 2 for 4 with a homer, double and three RBIs, and KJ Scobey was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.

Logan Prisco had his first start of the season and struck out five in four innings, allowing two hits and an unearned run. Cooper Parks picked up the win, striking out a batter in a third of an inning. USC used seven pitchers, with Patrick Dudley closing out the game by going the final two innings.

South Carolina hosts Charleston Southern on March 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Founders Park. The game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus.

College of Charleston 6, Presbyterian 3

MOUNT PLEASANT — Will Tippett homered and drove in three runs as College of Charleston defeated Presbyterian 6-3 in college baseball at Patriots Point.

The Cougars (5-7) scored a pair of runs in the first inning and led the whole way.

The Blue Hose (2-11) cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth, but Dylan Johnson tripled to deep center in the seventh and scored on a fielding error on the play. The following inning, Tippett homered to deep left field, a two-run blast to make it 6-2.

Jacob Amman was 2 for 5 with a double for the Cougars, while Tippett was 1 for 3.

Parker Sweeney got the win with two innings of scoreless relief of Carson Bryant, who opened with two scoreless innings. Alex Lyon allowed one run in three innings, striking out three, to earn the save.
