The Pirates have acquired infielder/outfielder Tyler Callihan from the Reds in exchange for Kyle Nicolas.

Callihan, 25, began the 2025 season with Class AAA Louisville, where he batted .303 with four home runs, 12 RBIs and a .938 OPS across 24 games from March 28-April 27. He made his major-league debut with the Reds on April 30 and ended up playing in four games, going 1 for 6 with an RBI before suffering a season-ending left forearm fracture after colliding with an outfield wall on May 5 in Atlanta.

Callihan entered this season rated by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline as Cincinnati’s No. 19 prospect.

Nicolas made 86 appearances over the last three seasons for the Pirates, compiling a 4.68 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. He’s currently playing for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic.

The Pirates now have one less arm in the hunt for a spot in a bullpen that seemingly has a few locks, including Dennis Santana, Gregory Soto, Isaac Mattson and Justin Lawrence.Â
