The Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers get their first taste of Cactus League action at their shared spring stadium on Friday.
The Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers both fell short of the postseason in 2025, with the Royals finishing at 82-80 and Texas breaking even at 81-81. The teams meet at their shared spring training home of Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Arizona to open the Cactus League season on Friday. The Rangers cut ties with several contributors from their 2023 World Series championship club, non-tendering both outfielder Adolis García and catcher Jonah Heim and trading second baseman Marcus Semien. Kansas City, meanwhile, re-signed All-Star third baseman Maikel Garcia to a five-year contract after he turned in a 5.8 WAR campaign last season.

The Royals were undone by the poor offensive performance of their outfield in 2025, a group that hit just .225/.285/.348, and acquired Isaac Collins from the Milwaukee Brewers along with reliever Nick Mears for lefty reliever Ángel Zerpa. Collins finished fourth in the NL Rookie of the Year voting after a .263/.368/.411 performance that included nine home runs and 16 stolen bases, but entering his age-28 season, there likely isn’t much upside.
Skip Schumaker returns to the dugout, replacing retired Bruce Bochy as the manager in Texas. The 2023 National League Manager of the Year after leading the Miami Marlins to a surprising playoff appearance, Schumaker served as a senior advisor to baseball operations for the Rangers last season. The Rangers traded four prospects to the Washington Nationals for left-hander MacKenzie Gore, who was an All-Star in 2025 before a dismal second half.
The Rangers added outfielder Brandon Nimmo in the trade for Semien. Nimmo hit .262/.324/.436 with 25 home runs and 13 steals last season and can play all three outfield positions. He also brings durability, playing at least 150 games in each of the last four campaigns.
