The Santa Rosa Junior College baseball team entered an important week against a top-caliber opponent on a heater.

The Bear Cubs swept Cosumnes River by scores of 9-2, 8-4 and 6-5 last week to push their winning streak to 10 games and land at No. 7 in this week’s California Community College Athletic Association poll.

Among the highlights in the sweep, Miles Clayton hit a grand slam and Jayden Hunt struck out seven over five scoreless innings out of the bullpen in a 9-2 win in the opener.

In their 8-4 win in the second game, Brett Neidlinger homered twice and JT Summers went yard in a three-hit day as they helped the Bear Cubs plate four runs in the top of the ninth for the win.

And in their 6-5 win in the finale, Aiden Sakai hit a home run and Nathan Bunyard was clutch out of the bullpen, earning the save after going the final 1-1/3 innings.

The Bear Cubs were 13-3 overall and 3-0 in the Big 8 heading into this week’s three-game series with No. 6 San Joaquin Delta but saw their winning streak snapped in a 15-5 loss to the Mustangs in the opening game Wednesday.

SRJC trailed just 5-4 in the top of the seventh before SJD unloaded with 10 runs over the next two innings to win going away.

Game 2 was Thursday at SRJC, with the finale at SJD on Friday.

Beach volleyball

The Bear Cubs’ unbeaten streak ended last week as they dropped their Big 8 Conference openers on Friday.

The Bear Cubs fell 3-2 to Solano and 4-1 to San Joaquin Delta to fall to 7-2 on the year. They’ll look to bounce back with another pair of conference matches at Spring Hills Church in Santa Rosa on Friday against Cosumnes River and Sacramento City.

Softball

The SRJC softball team moved back to .500 on the year with a solid play last week, collecting a 4-2 record to improve to 8-8 on the season and 2-4 in the Big 8.

The Bear Cubs swept San Jose 9-1 and 8-5 last Wednesday before falling 6-0 to No. 15 Folsom Lake and then bouncing back with a series split against Sierra, a 7-0 win and an 8-3 loss.

They then opened this week with a 7-0 win over Modesto.

Mia Avila went the distance in the circle in the 9-1 win over San Jose with three strikeouts and five hits allowed and homered at the plate.

In the 7-0 win over Sierra, Kylee Bauman hit a grand slam and added a solo shot to lead the offensive effort while Brook Myhre and Avila combined for the five-hit shutout in the circle.

Avila was back at it in the win over Modesto on Tuesday, striking out eight in a three-hit shutout while also driving in five runs at the plate.

The Bear Cubs are at American River on Saturday for a doubleheader.

Track and field

The Bear Cubs turned in some solid marks at the Beaver Invitational at American River on Saturday.

Jared Hayes ran to a second-place finish in the 800-meter race with a time of 1 minutes, 56.47 seconds and then placed fourth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:06.40.

Mahdi Camara also recorded a pair of top-five finishes in the throws, taking third in the discus with a toss of 142 feet, 5 inches and fifth in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 1.25 inches.

On the women’s side, Gracie Shaw had two top-10 finishes in field events, taking eighth in the javelin with a mark of 86 feet, 8 inches and seventh in the shot put with a toss of 32 feet, 10.75 inches. Ysabella Roscyl Galisanao recorded the team’s best finish, taking sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:01.25.

The Bear Cubs are back in action next week when they host the Pat Ryan Invitational on Thursday and Friday.

Swimming

The Bear Cubs men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fared well at the Mt. Sac Invitational on Saturday.

The men placed fifth out of 20 teams, while the women placed seventh out of 20.

Bryson Throm and Kai Holt led the men in the pool with a pair of third-place finishes each, Throm in the 100 and 200 back and Holt in the 500 and 1650 free.

For the women, Addison Klosevitz led the way with two second-place finishes in the 500 and 1,650 free.

The Bear Cubs are back in action next Friday at the Big 8 Invite at American River College.

Keyonee Neal, Dominican University women’s basketball

The Rancho Cotate grad scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the Penguins’ 73-69 win over Fresno Pacific on Saturday in their regular-season finale. The senior guard finished the regular season second on the team in scoring (12.6 points per game) and first in rebounding (7.1), earning second-team All-PacWest honors. The Penguins are 21-7 overall heading into the PacWest tournament, where they are the No. 5 seed and opened against No. 4 Westmont on Thursday.

Lucca Lowenberg, Meredith Gilbertson, CSU East Bay women’s basketball

Lowenberg, an Analy and SRJC grad, scored a team-high 17 points in a 56-48 win over Stanislaus State last week, while Gilbertson, a Windsor and SRJC grad, grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds. Gilbertson also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds in a 75-69 win over UC Merced on Saturday. The Pioneers are done for the year and finished 12-16 overall.

Andrew Pengel, Emporia State men’s basketball

The Rancho Cotate grad scored 16 points in a 92-78 loss to Missouri Western last week in the regular-season finale for the Warriors, who finished 9-19 overall. Pengel finished his junior season second on the team in scoring at 10.1 points per game.

Josh Jannicelli, UC Santa Barbara baseball

The Cardinal Newman grad pitched well in his second collegiate start Tuesday in an 11-1 win over Loyola Marymount. The freshman struck out seven with three walks, two hits and a run allowed in four innings of work but took a no-decision. Through three appearances, he’s 0-1 with a 2.25 earned run average and 14 strikeouts with three hits allowed in eight innings.

Jordan Giacomini, University of Nevada-Reno baseball

The Casa Grande and SRJC grad picked up his first victory of the year for the Wolfpack on Sunday in an 11-5 win over UC Davis. The junior went six strong innings, striking out six with three walks while allowing five hits and three earned runs.

Dante Vachini, Cal Poly baseball

The Petaluma grad had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run in a 12-2 win over Pepperdine on Tuesday.

Tanner Bradley, University of Oregon baseball

The Cardinal Newman grad had a stellar outing in a 7-2 win over Arizona in the Live Like Lou Las Vegas Baseball Classic last week. The sophomore righty struck out nine with just one walk in 4-1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to pick up his first win of the year. Bradley was also named to the All-Tournament team.

Dario Freschi, St. Mary’s baseball

The Vintage grad doubled and scored a run in a 7-2 win over UC Davis on Tuesday. The freshman infielder now has three doubles on the year in nine at-bats.

Jake McCoy, San Jose State baseball

The Casa Grande and SRJC grad continued his hot start to the year as he collected hits in each of his last three games. His big performance came in a 13-4 loss to St. Mary’s, where he went 4-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. He’s now recorded a hit in 10 of the Spartans’ 12 games this year and is batting .255 with four doubles, a home run and five RBIs.

Lila Partridge, University of Kansas softball

The Casa Grande grad picked up her first save and second win of the season last week. She fired two scoreless innings out of the bullpen in a 6-5 win over Omaha and then went five strong innings in a start against Boise State, striking out one with two hits and one run allowed in a 10-1 five-inning win.

Jamie McCaughey, University of Hawaii softball

The Casa Grande grad hit two home runs last week, helping the Rainbow Warriors take three of four games against Mercyhurst and Portland State. She hit a solo home run in an 8-0 win over Mercyhurst, then went 4-for-7 with a home run and four RBIs in two games against Portland State. On the year, the junior infielder is now batting .319 with four home runs and nine RBIs.

Marissa Brody, Cal Poly Humboldt softball

The Casa Grande grad kept up her hot hitting to start the year, collecting at least one knock in all four games last week. The highlight was a 3-for-4 day with a double and an RBI in an 11-6 win over Simon Fraser. Brody also recorded three RBIs over the four games. On the year, she’s batting .482 with a home run, nine doubles and eight RBIs.

Nehemiah Holiday, Chico State men’s track and field

The Maria Carrillo grad won the triple jump at the Butte Black and Gold Invitational on Saturday, placing first with a mark of 13.95 meters.

Natalie Farquhar, Princeton women’s swimming

The Cardinal Newman grad made the finals in the 500 free, the 200 free and the 100 free to help the Tigers win their fourth consecutive Ivy League championship two weeks ago.

Finn Brophy, University of Hawaii men’s swimming

The Maria Carrillo grad helped the Rainbow Warriors win the Big West Conference Championship in mid-February. He swam to a second-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 42.67 seconds and then helped lead the 400 free relay team to a first-place finish with a meet-record time of 2:51.19, breaking the previous meet record he had helped set the year prior.
