The Pittsburgh Pirates have long been building their farm system and collecting plenty of upside Minor League talent, and finally, all of that is coming to fruition.
However, where does Pittsburgh’s organization rank compared to the rest of baseball?

Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo, and Sam Dykstra of MLB Pipeline recently ranked each farm system heading into the 2026 season, and the Pirates came in at No. 3.
This is quite a jump, considering the Pirates had the No. 14 farm system heading into 2025 and sat at No. 9 at the midpoint of last season. The front office has done a really good job of identifying, drafting, signing, and developing some of the best young players in the game.
“Sure, Konnor Griffin is generating all sorts of buzz, and for good reason, but there’s a lot more here than just the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball,” wrote the trio of analysts.
“For starters, the Pirates also boast the best pitching prospect duo in Bubba Chandler and Seth Hernandez. Beyond the five in the Top 100 — three of whom could help the Pirates turn things around in the big leagues this year — talent is amassing at every level and at pretty much every position.”

As the analysts point out, Konnor Griffin is one of the clear reasons why the Pirates have one of the top farm systems in baseball. By all indications and scouts, he has the potential to be a generational player.

Even if he doesn’t make the Opening Day roster, it shouldn’t take long for the infielder to reach the big-league level in 2026.
That said, Callis, Mayo, and Dykstra do a great job of pointing out the other potential stars in Pittsburgh’s organization, such as Hernandez and even Barco.
The exciting part of all this is that, with the Pirates having one of the top farm systems in baseball, the front office is finally starting to supplement the young talent with proven big-league players.
The future really is looking bright for the Pirates, and that all starts with their elite farm system.
