The Washington Nationals hosted the New York Yankees last night in a stadium sell-out, even though the Yankees didn’t exactly bring starters with them per league requirements. Maybe there is an exception when the World Baseball Classic is in session. The Nats sealed the win when James Wood put it away with a 2-run triple for a 3-0 winner.
Manager Blake Butera continued to bring in top prospects for a taste of big league camp. Last night was Gavin Fien‘s turn. Not only did he catch the ceremonial first pitch (and the ceremonial second pitch too), he got to pinch-hit in the 8th inning and almost snuck a hard grounder down the right field line that was knocked down, and he was out by a couple of feet. What a feat it was to get on that field as a teenager. Fien was the 57th organizational player to get a plate appearance for the Nats in this Spring Training so far!
The team is 7-4 with three ties so far through the first 14 games. Throw in the 5-1 win against Venezuela’s WBC team, and they are 8-4. Andrew Alvarez starts this game as the home team against the Houston Astros.
At this point, we only have 14 Spring Training games in the books and the one exhibition game, and no batter has more than 22 official plate appearances on the Washington Nationals. And for that matter, no pitcher has more than 6.0 innings in official games.
The Nationals made their 3rd round of cuts from the Big League roster: – RHP Riley Cornelio optioned to Triple-A Rochester – RHP Luis Perales – optioned to Triple-A Rochester – INF Orelvis Martinez – to Minor League camp – INF Sergio Alcantara – to Minor League camp – RHP Bryce Montes de Oca – to Minor League camp – RHP Tyler Baum – to Minor League camp – C Caleb Lomavita – to Minor League camp.
