CC baseball’s offense shines in wins against Crowley’s Ridge

Columbia College baseball dominated Crowley’s Ridge, securing 16-3 and 17-2 victories in the doubleheader. The offense put on a clinic against the Pioneers, posting the Cougars’ two highest run totals in a game this season and posting their second and third highest hit totals.

Braden Hemmer started the scoring for the Cougars in the second inning with a homer to knot the score at one before leaving the yard again with the bases loaded in the fourth to blow the game open. Hemmer’s five RBI led the team, and his three hits tied for the team lead.

Dylan Carlton also recorded a home run, while Kolten Payne pitched six innings, giving up two runs and striking out eight. Payne leads Columbia with 31 strikeouts on the year.

The second game of the day was tighter until a 10-run eighth inning from Columbia skewed the scoreboard in favor of the Cougars. Columbia hit four home runs, a season high.

Carlton went deep for the second time of the day in the third inning, another two-run homer to put Columbia up 3-1.

The other three homers all came in the 10-run eighth. Hunter Shoulta, Ian Nolph and Tyler Renn all hit three-run bombs to take the score from 8-1 to 17-1 in the blink of an eye. Parker Anderson pitched six innings, striking out a season-high nine batters and walking zero for the third time in his four starts this season.

With the victory, the Cougars improve to 11-6 on the season and start 2-0 in American Midwest Conference play. Columbia will look to complete the three-game sweep of Crowley’s Ridge at 9 a.m. Monday before gearing up to host No. 12 Missouri Baptist at noon Tuesday.

CC softball splits doubleheader against Quincy University

Columbia College Softball managed a split with Quincy University, taking the first game 3-1 before falling 8-0 in the second.

Early offense proved to be the difference in the opener for the Cougars. Wriley Taylor hit a double in the first inning that drove in two, and a wild pitch in the second allowed Liz Enlow to race home in what would be CC’s final run of the day.

Kennedy Jensen pitched her first complete game of the season and struck out a season-high seven batters while walking zero.

Columbia was held to four hits in Game 2 and left 12 runners on base, failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Abigail Zismer led the team with two hits.

Kathryn Guinn made her first pitching appearance of the season, which came with some growing pains. She gave up four runs in 2.1 innings of work, allowing three hits and walking three batters.

Columbia (9-7) hosts No. 15 Missouri Baptist University in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Columbia.
