(Lincoln, NE) – Hastings overcame a 4-2 deficit on Saturday, ending with a 10th-inning pinch-hit home run by junior Dylan Wimbs, to win 5-4.
In the first inning, sophomore Tyler Rojas was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and reached third on a wild pitch and stolen base. On a batted ball by junior Samuele Bruno, Rojas scored to put Hastings up 1-0.
Sophomore Peighton Vargas sent one over the wall in the fourth inning to go up 2-0. Nebraska Wesleyan came back in the bottom half of the fourth and scored four runs. A leadoff walk later scored on a one-out double, then they scored three more runs on four singles and a walk to take a 4-2 lead.
Hastings cut into the lead in the sixth at 4-3, as freshman Diego Martinez got on with a two-out single and scored on an RBI-double from junior Jared Delgado. In the eighth inning, Hastings loaded the bases with two walks and a hit-batter with two outs. Sophomore Cody Haynes walked to bring in the tying run, but Nebraska Wesleyan got out of the inning with a strikeout.
On the third pitch of the 10th inning, Wimbs’ deep ball put Hastings ahead 5-4 and junior Eduardo Galicia got the final three outs to earn the win.
Delgado led the team in hits, going 2-4 with a walk and an RBI. Vargas was 1-3 coming on his home run and added a walk.
All of Nebraska Wesleyan’s hits, in addition to runs, came in the fourth inning, only mustering one other baserunner on a walk in those innings and striking out 11 times. Senior Brody Severin got the start, pitching a scoreless first. Freshman Connor Weber then had two no-hit innings, and beginning in the fifth inning, Hastings got one scoreless inning from freshman Trevor Huston, two from senior Markus Miller, and three from Galicia.
Up next, Hastings will play their first home games of the year at Duncan Field on Tuesday, Mar. 10 at 2 and 4pm against York.
