The 2026 Spring Training roster cuts continued on March 9. Over a third of the MLB teams trimmed down their spring roster in some way, shape, or form. And, some notable prospects were among the cuts, including Yankees outfielder Spencer Jones.

Jones & Rodriguez optioned to Triple-A

The Yankees announced that pitcher Elmer Rodriguez and outfielder Spencer Jones were optioned to Triple-A Scranton on March 9.

Rodriguez, who struck out three over three innings on the 9th for Team Puerto Rico, doesn’t have much Triple-A experience. The 22-year-old made just one start at the level late last season.

Jones, however, does. The former first-round pick currently has a team-high three home runs for the Yanks this spring. A logjam in the Yankees’ outfield, though, doesn’t leave him with a path for playing time at this juncture.

Twins cut nine

The Minnesota Twins cut their spring roster by nine on the 9th. Patrick Winkel was reassigned to Minor League camp, while outfielder Hendry Mendez was optioned to Double-A Wichita.

Emmanuel Rodriguez, Marco Raya, Connor Prielipp, Kendry Rojas, John Klein, Andrew Morris, and Gabriel Gonzalez were optioned to St. Paul.

Gonzalez had a good spring for Minnesota, as he picked up nine hits, a team high as of writing. Rodriguez, meanwhile, was tied for the team lead in home runs (2). However, Rodriguez had a swing-and-miss rate over 45% in the Grapefruit League.

Red Sox demote eight

The Red Sox sent many of their non-roster invites to Minor League camp. Nate Baez, Ronald Rosario, Osvaldo Berrios, Hobie Harris, Vinny Nittoli, Devin Sweet, and Jeremy Wu-Yelland were reassigned on the 9th.

Additionally, Jake Bennett was optioned to Triple-A. Bennett was acquired from the Nationals over the winter.

Pirates trim spring roster

Eight Pirates were sent off the team’s 2026 spring roster.

Thomas Harrington, who saw a brief time in the Pirates’ rotation last year, was one of five players to be optioned to Indianapolis. Brandan Bidois, Esmerlyn Valdez, Antwone Kelly, and Wilber Dotel were also sent to Triple-A.

Khristian Curtis, Mitch Jebb, and Omar Alfonzo were reassigned to Minor League camp.

Made among Brewers’ cuts

The Milwaukee Brewers announced that nine players were removed from the team’s spring roster.

Jesus Made, arguably the Brewers’ top prospect, was among the reassignments. Luke Adams, Greg Jones, Eddys Leonard, Darrien Miller, Matthew Wood, and Ramon Rodriguez were reassigned to Minor League camp, as well.

Catcher Jeferson Quero and pitcher Sammy Peralta were optioned to Triple-A Nashville.

Athletics made demotions

Fifteen players were trimmed off the Athletics’ spring roster on March 9.

Six of those players were on the 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A. Mason Barnett, Brett Harris, Braden Nett, Chen Zhong-Ao Zhuang, and power-hitting outfielder Junior Perez will head to Las Vegas.

The other nine were reassignments. Former first-round pick Jamie Arnold, Kade Morris, Geoff Hartlieb, Ben Bowden, Bryan Lavastida, Euribiel Angeles, Clark Elliott, Ryan Lasko, and Joshua Kuroda-Grauer were moved to Minor League camp.

Tigers cut four

Three Tigers were optioned to the Minors on the 9th. Hao-Yu Lee, who was removed from Chinese Taipei’s roster due to injury, was optioned to Triple-A along with Eduardo Valencia. Thayron Liranzo was sent to Double-A Erie.

Outfielder Max Clark was reassigned to Minor League camp.

Other moves

The Mets optioned Jonathan Pintaro and Nick Morabito to Triple-A Syracuse.

Outfielder Dairon Blanco and reliever Michel Otanez were cut by the Rangers on March 9.

Chicago (AL) optioned three players to Triple-A Charlotte. Those players were Tanner Murray, David Sandlin, and Wikelman Gonzalez.

The Reds reassigned catcher Michael Trautwein to Minor League camp. Chase Petty and Christian Encarnacion-Strand were optioned to Triple-A Louisville.
