Monday was looking like a tough day at the office for Garrett Crochet, but the Red Sox ace battled back and finished off a respectable third outing of the spring in Monday’s 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

After sending the Phillies down 1-2-3 in the first, Crochet had a challenging second inning in which the first four batters reached safely. Crochet allowed two singles and hit a batter to load the bases with nobody out, and then allowed an RBI single to Jose Rodriguez to make it 1-0 Phillies.

From there Crochet regrouped and minimized the damage, drawing a run-scoring double play and a flyout to keep it a 2-0 game. Those were the first two of 10 straight batters he retired between the second and fifth inning, a streak that didn’t end until the Phillies recorded consecutive two-out singles to wrap up Crochet’s outing.

One of those inherited runners came around to score on a double steal, giving Crochet a final line of three runs on 4 2/3 innings and 59 pitches with five hits, no walks, a hit batsman and two strikeouts. The Red Sox left-hander is expected to pitch twice more in the spring before taking the mound on Opening Day against the Cincinnati Reds.

Sogard homers

Nick Sogard had his best offensive performance of the spring, hitting a three-run home run to lead the Red Sox offensively. Sogard’s shot came in the bottom of the third to put Boston ahead 4-2 and came shortly after Carlos Narvaez broke the ice with an RBI single.

Trevor Story also went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored, Braiden Ward went 2 for 3 with an RBI single, Allan Castro went 2 for 2 and Marcelo Mayer went 1 for 3 with a walk and an impressively turned double play defensively at second base.

Rookie relievers shine

Ryan Watson and Tyler Samaniego, two rookie relievers looking to make their big league debuts on Opening Day, had strong outings on Monday. Watson had a walk and a strikeout in a scoreless sixth inning, and Samaniego sent the Phillies down 1-2-3 with a strikeout in the seventh.

Casas update

According to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe, Triston Casas will not appear in any spring training games before the end of camp. The Red Sox first baseman had previously expressed optimism that he could play in games before Opening Day but reportedly has not yet progressed to a point in his rehab where that is on the table.

Coming up next

Sonny Gray will start on Tuesday for the Red Sox against the Detroit Tigers, and Aroldis Chapman, Justin Slaten and Wyatt Olds are scheduled to pitch as well.
