Spencer Jones, the New York Yankees’ No. 6-ranked prospect, was optioned to Triple-A on Monday, but not before making the realization that there should be a place for him in the big leagues.

“The biggest thing that I’ve gotten out of this year is the feeling that I belong and I can compete,” Jones told reporters on Tuesday in Tampa (h/t Bryan Hoch, MLB.com). “I can do whatever to help the team win.”

The 24-year-old had a strong showing at New York’s major-league camp this spring. In 18 at-bats, he slashed .333/.455/.889 (1.344 OPS) with three home runs, seven RBI, and three stolen bases.

Starting the season with Triple-A brings another opportunity where the pros of his offensive game can outweigh the alarming cons. Across 116 games between Double-A and Triple-A, he launched 35 home runs with 80 RBI to go with a .932 OPS.

But he also struck out a staggering 179 times in 438 at-bats — a bloated 40.9% strikeout rate.

The Yankees enter the 2026 season with no place to put Jones, at least at the moment. Their outfield is set at all three positions with Cody Bellinger in left, Trent Grisham in center, and Aaron Judge in right. Giancarlo Stanton, who is as healthy as possible while managing double tennis elbow, will inhabit the DH spot.

“He’s got a real chance to impact our club this year,” manager Aaron Boone said on Monday. “… Reality is, he’s coming off a really strong season. I feel like he continues to make really solid adjustments. He came in here to spring and has represented really well and has performed. You see the signs of him continuing to get better.”
