Griswold-CAM 12, East Mills 2: The opening game for the new Griswold-CAM cooperative was a success, and it was a nine-run first inning that made for an explosive start.
Addison Adams’ bases-loaded hit with nobody out scored the first two runs, the hit coming up just short of a grand slam. The Tigers took advantage of control problems from Wolverines’ starter Alexis Jones, with the next five batters resulting in two walks and three hit batters, before Askeland got another double to help the Tiger lead continue to grow.
The Tigers added a run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly, and two more runs in the third to end the game early.
Tiger starter Ailey Wahlert gave up just two runs on a single hit. The offense had just five hits, but took advantage of walks and hit batters. Griswold is 1-0.
Exira-EHK/Audubon 10, IKM-Manning 0: The Spartans opened the season with the No. 2 ranking in Iowa Class 2A, on the strength of the progam’s state runner-up finish from a year ago. It appears the program is picking up where it left off with a dominating win over the Wolves Tuesday night.
After battling to a scoreless tie the first two innings, the Spartan offense got going in the third inning, on Zoey Rasmussen’s RBI single and a double-steal to score Anna Larsen.
Five stolen bases in the fourth inning helped lead to a big seven-run fourth inning, and the Wolves went down in order in the bottom half of the inning to end the game.
Riley Miller gave up just two hits while striking out five to pick up the win. Abby Wanser and Jordan Mulford each had two hits, with Wanser collecting two RBIs.
The Wheelers were at home on Wednesday against Underwood. All games this year are at Audubon.
Riverside 10, Tri-Center 2: Peyton Schafer was the Lady Dawgs’ star of the game, getting it done on both sides of the plate in the Western Iowa Conference win over the Trojans Tuesday night in Oakland.
She struck out seven batters, giving up five hits and walking just three on the mound. At the plate, she was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Riverside is 1-0 on the year.
BASEBALL
East Mills 4, Griswold 1: The Tigers got a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut into the Wolverines’ three-run lead, but that’s as close as it got in a homefield loss Tuesday night in Corner Conference action.
Bode Wyman scored the run for Griswold as he reached twice on East Mills’ errors on the night. The Wolverines had five errors, but the Tigers couldn’t take full advantage. Wyman ended the game with a double, the only extra-base hit as the Tigers were held to three hits.
Brayden Lockwood took the loss, striking out eight while giving up six walks and two earned runs. Griswold is 0-4 on the year.
Tri-Center 16, Riverside 3: The Bulldogs were held to five baserunners, two on walks, as they dropped its season opener to the Trojans Tuesday night in Oakland.
Peyton Amdor, Aaron Smith and Victor Alfonso had the lone runs for the Bulldogs. Four Bulldog pitchers combined to give up 12 Trojan hits and walk 13 batters while striking out just six.
IKM-Manning 7, Audubon 0: The Wolves scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, with seven of their first eight batters reaching to aid their cause as the Wheelers were shut out.
Wheeler pitchers also walked seven batters, and was unable to string together any hits against Wolves’ ace Brock Kusel, as he and closer Karsyn Lorenzen combined for the two-hitter. The Wheelers did get five walks themselves, but could not take advantage.
Wheeler starter Carson Wessel struck out eight and gave up three hits, while Jack Stanerson was in in relief and gave up two hits and striking out one.
Audubon is 1-1 on the year, 0-1 in the Western Iowa Conference. Underwood was the foe on Wednesday.
