Kyle Teel’s injury will apparently create an opportunity for Mickey Gasper in the World Baseball Classic.

Teel has a Grade 2 hamstring strain and will soon rejoin the Chicago White Sox spring training camp, Chris Getz told reporters, including Scott Merkin of MLB.com.

According to Rob Bradford of WEEI, Teel’s WBC roster spot could go to Boston Red Sox catcher Mickey Gasper. Bradford reported earlier Wednesday that Gasper was on his way to Houston to join Italy in light of Teel’s injury.

Teel left Italy’s March 11 game against the United States after he injured himself after sliding into second base in the sixth inning of a pool play game at Daikin Park. Italy beat the U.S., 8-6, in a surprising upset win.
Italy plays Mexico on March 11 and can advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament with a victory.
Teel’s absence could hurt Team Italy in the WBC. He went 2-for-2 before suffering the injury and was replaced by J.J. D’Orazio for the remainder of the game.
The White Sox also had Teel penciled in to potentially take the lion’s share of the playing time behind the plate in 2026. As a rookie last year, Teel slashed .273/.375/.411 in 78 games.
Now, Edgar Quero is poised to be the White Sox’s primary catcher to start the regular season. According to Merkin, Teel could be out for 4 to 6 weeks.
