The Chicago White Sox have seen an injury to a key player of their 2026 team. While injuries can always happen, one of their young starters will miss Opening Day now. This injury is not considered to be a long-term injury and affect his season, but is a bit of a downer. Let’s take a deeper dive into who is injured and what it means going forward.

MLB’s Scott Merkin is reporting that catcher Kyle Teel is going to be missing some action to begin the 2026 season due to an injury. The injury is officially ruled a right hamstring strain, and he will miss 4-6 weeks. Teel was injured on Tuesday night for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic in their game against Team United States.
Teel would open up the top of the sixth inning with a double down the right field line. However, while rounding first base, he would grimace before immediately exiting the game. Teel was swinging the bat well as he was 4 for 6 with a home run, one RBI, and two runs scored.
He is expected to be a mainstay in the White Sox lineup as he was productive in his rookie season. Posting a 121 OPS+ in 78 games in, 2025, his bat looked capable of dominating MLB. Chicago is expected to have him return mid-to-late April, so this injury will not cost Teel too many regular season games, but it’s not ideal for a young team to be without their catcher.
With Teel missing the beginning of the season with this injury, expect to see Edgar Quero get the starting catcher spot early on. It will be interesting to see if he is able to return earlier than the six-week prognosis.
