The Montreal Expos were erased from the Major League Baseball landscape when the franchise relocated to Washington, D.C. for the 2005 sason.

Now, a small but important remnant of the Expos’ storied past is being erased from the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Cooperstown, N.Y. institution is granting Hall of Famer Andre Dawson’s request to have his plaque changed. Originally depicted with an Expos logo when he was inducted in 2010, Dawson’s plaque will be recast to remove the logo at his request.

“I’m satisfied that we can put it behind us,” he told MLB.com on March 11 from the Chicago Cubs’ spring training camp.

Dawson was one of Montreal’s first stars. In 11 seasons with the Expos, the outfielder won six Gold Glove Awards and the 1977 National League Rookie of the Year Award.

Dawson joined the Cubs in 1987 and won the NL MVP Award that same year. He made five All-Star teams over the next six seasons in Chicago.

Even though he played more games in Montreal, and still ranks third in Expos/Nationals history in home runs (225) and stolen bases (253), Dawson wanted a Cubs logo on his plaque in Cooperstown.

The Hall of Fame has the final decision about which team’s logo will depicted on a player’s plaque. Since 2014, players who made a significant impact with multiple franchises have had the option of a blank cap.

Dawson, again contrary to his wishes, will get a blank cap when the plaque is recast.

“The Hall of Fame Board of Directors voted unanimously to provide Andre Dawson with the option of having no logo on his Hall of Fame plaque, which will be recast to reflect his wishes,” Jane Forbes Clark, Chairman of the Board of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, said in a statement. “This decision gives Andre a choice that he would have taken if it had been available when he was elected in 2010, just four years prior to the formal implementation of that alternative.”

The Hall had never previously recast a plaque for the purpose of changing the logo depicted on a player’s hat.

Now that it has, the Expos once again are drawing the short straw.
