The San Francisco Giants have made the biggest splash on international signing day.
Going into the 2026 season, the San Francisco Giants are slated to begin the season with two All-Star pitchers in the rotation. They will also have some pitchers who have dealt with injuries and some looking for a bounce-back season.
The Giants are projected to have Logan Webb and Robbie Ray headline the rotation, followed by Tyler Mahle, Adrian Houser, and Landon Roupp. Just how the rotation shakes out remains to be seen.
There are going to be some pitchers who will be available at the trade deadline. Mike Axisa of CBS Sports listed 10 trade candidates who could be available this summer. One of the more sought-after ones was linked to San Francisco.
San Francisco Giants Linked To Miami Marlins Right-Hander Sandy Alcantara
There have been rumors surrounding Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara for the last couple of trade deadlines. There was some thought he might have been moved over the winter. He wasn’t. Instead, Miami’s president of baseball operations, Peter Bendix, moved two other starters.
Edward Cabrera was traded to the Chicago Cubs, and Ryan Weathers to the New York Yankees. It leaves Alcantara as the ace, but it feels like it’s only a matter of time before he’s moved. He was linked to the Giants along with the Cubs and Atlanta Braves.
“The Marlins moved two veteran-ish starters this offseason (Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers) but hung on to Alcantara, who was a prime trade candidate last winter and again at last year’s trade deadline. He instead remains in Miami. How long will that last? I don’t think it will be too much longer given his $17 million salary this year and $21 million club option next year. Interested teams will give up more to get two postseason of Alcantara rather than one, making a trade this summer more likely,” Axisa wrote.
His salary is certainly one that shouldn’t scare away teams with what he brings to the table if he’s healthy. His value rose in the second half of last season as he proved that he’s recovered from surgery that cost him the 2024 season in South Florida.
Sandy Alcantara Would Be a Huge Addition for the Giants
Alcantara would be a massive addition to San Francisco’s rotation. The 2022 Cy Young Award winner was 11-12 last year with a 5.36 ERA in 174.2 innings with 165 strikeouts. Considering he missed all of 2024, those numbers were not bad. The key was his strong second half of the season.
It’s no guarantee that Miami will move Alcantara at any point. After moving Cabrera, and Weathers opens the door for some of their younger pitchers to step up and earn a spot in the rotation.
“The Marlins still have a ways to go to get back into contention, though they are trending in the right direction. They have a lot of young pitching coming and trading Alcantara would further improve the young talent base,” wrote Axisa.
In all likelihood, what happens at the deadline will be determined by the Marlins’ position in the standings. If Alcantara is made available, there will be plenty of suitors that the Giants will be up against.
