Romy Gonzalez underwent a successful left shoulder arthroscopic debridement Thursday, the Red Sox announced shortly before 10 p.m.

The procedure, on his non-throwing arm, was performed by Dr. Jeffrey R. Dugas at Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Dugas also performed Gonzalez’s previous shoulder surgery in 2023.

At minimum, Gonzalez, 29, will miss the first two months of the regular season. The Red Sox placed him on the 60-day injured list Thursday evening to open a 40-man roster spot for left-hander Danny Coulombe, signed that day to a one-year, $1 million contract.

Other than pitching and catching, Gonzalez has made at least one appearance at every position since the Red Sox claimed him off waivers from the Chicago White Sox during the 2023-24 offseason. Manager Alex Cora sees second base as his utility-man’s best position, and played him there for 42 games (288 innings) last season. Due to Triston Casas’ season-ending injury in May, Gonzalez logged even more innings at first base (368 1/3 innings) in a platoon with Abraham Toro.

Gonzalez batted .305 with a .826 OPS in a career-high 96 games last season, and is a particularly valuable asset against left-handed pitching; he’s hit .317 with a .931 OPS line against them over two seasons in Boston.

Though Gonzalez will miss significant time this is among the more optimal outcomes of a visit to Dr. Dugas; a cleanup procedure, rather than a major, potentially season-ending surgery.
