COLLEGE STATION — The nonconference slate went just about as well as Texas A&M baseball could have hoped. Now, with SEC play starting Friday, the country will see how good the Aggies really are.

No. 22 A&M (15-1) travels to Norman, Okla., to face No. 9 Oklahoma in its first true road series of the season.  The Sooners (15-2) have won five in a row, including a 6-1 win Wednesday over UT Arlington.

Oklahoma middle of pack offensively

The Sooners enter Friday eighth in the conference in team batting average (.310), 10th in slugging percentage (.511), and 15th in home runs (18). Their on-base percentage is solid, entering the weekend sixth at .452, while being the best walking team in the conference (122).

But the Sooners are 14th in hits (159), seventh in doubles (37) and 11th in strikeouts (129). The group is led by catcher Deiten Lachance, who transferred from McLennan Community College. The junior from Canada is batting a team-high .404 with eight doubles and 20 RBIs.

Sooners have been solid on the mound

The Aggies’ pitching has been strong, ranking fifth in the SEC with a 2.95 ERA. Right behind them at sixth is Oklahoma at 2.96.

Sooners pitchers have allowed the second-fewest hits (97) and rank sixth in earned runs (46). As a staff, they’ve surrendered just eight home runs; only Texas and Florida (5) have given up fewer.

Saturday’s starting pitcher, LJ Mercurius, has been outstanding for Oklahoma. The junior right-hander is 4-0 with a 0.39 ERA. He’s struck out 34 batters and allowed just six walks in 23⅓ innings.

First meeting as SEC foes

It’s the first-ever meeting between the Aggies and Sooners as SEC rivals, and their first matchup since facing off in Omaha in 2022. Oklahoma ended A&M’s season in the opening round of the College World Series before finishing as the national runner-up to Ole Miss.

However, the two former Big 12 rivals are tied at 34-34 in the all-time series, with A&M holding a 6-4 edge over the last 10 meetings dating back to 2010. Prior to the two losses in 2022, the Aggies had won six consecutive games.

Texas A&M baseball vs Oklahoma series prediction

Texas A&M 2-1. Securing a series victory against a top-10 opponent on the road should inspire some skeptics. The Aggies have faced injuries throughout the season but have kept winning, except when they faced a top-ranked UCLA team. Their pitching has struggled at times, and their bats have been timely; expect that to continue in Norman, Okla.
