One Los Angeles Dodgers prospect who’s believed to be on the verge of breaking into the big leagues had a legend of the game to show him the way.

Zach Ehrhard, an outfielder from Tampa, Florida, was coached in high school by Hall of Famer Wade Boggs, reports Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.

Boggs served as a volunteer assistant coach for Paul R. Wharton High School in Tampa.

“It was really cool,” Ehrhard said. “He’s a great guy and really helpful. Wade Boggs is a Hall of Famer. That’s crazy in itself, but he didn’t act like it.”

Ehrhard came to the Boys in Blue alongside James Tibbs III in the trade that sent Dustin May to the Boston Red Sox.

That trade also separated Ehrhard from his brother, Drew.

“It was very emotional,” Ehrhard told Ardaya. “It was a tough one, because just getting to play with him was such a dream. But afterwards, all my teammates that were there in Portland with me were very supportive and just let me know this was a good thing for me.”

How is Zach Ehrhard Doing for the Dodgers?

This is his first spring with the Dodgers, and so far, he’s made an impact, slashing .316/.395/.500 in 43 plate appearances.

Of his 12 hits, five were doubles and one was a triple, and he’s also stolen three bases and knocked in five runs.

“I don’t try to be anybody different than who I am. I’m a competitor, I’m a tough ball player,” Ehrhard told Jesse Borek of MLB.com. “I’ve never been the 50 home run guy or the 100 stolen-base guy, I just kind of go in and play the game hard every day.”

Ehrhard also told Borek that he’s fitting in nicely with the Dodgers and appreciates the coaching he’s received.

“What they focus on with the Dodgers, it feels much more personalized,” he told Borek. “They’re very specific and intentional with, ‘OK, you’re really good at this. So let’s focus on that.’ … They’ve made just little minor tweaks here and there that have helped me a ton.”
