It’s Friday, and as the baseball world tunes in for the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic, there’s still some news coming out of Major League Baseball.

Here’s some of the top stories, including an honor for a New York Mets Hall of Famer.

Mets Retiring Carlos Beltran’s Number

Hall of Fame inductee Carlos Beltran will be the ninth player to have his number retired by the New York Mets, the team confirmed to Will Sammon and Tim Britton of The Athletic. The news was first reported by the New York Post.

The ceremony to retire jersey No. 15 is set to occur at some point this season.

Mets Carlos Beltran hits an RBI single in the 5th against the Yankees, in the second game of the subway series at Yankee Stadium June 25, 2005. The Mets defeated the Yankees 10 – 3.

As The Athletic noted, “Beltrán’s legacy with the Mets is complicated,” marked both by his huge contract with the team, big performances and disappointments in big moments like the end of Game 7 of the 2006 National League Championship Series.

Beltran also was set to manage the Mets but was fired before the beginning of the 2020 season due to his role in the Houston Astros’ sign stealing.

Brewers’ Priester Out For at Least a Month

The Associated Press reports that Quinn Priester, pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, will miss at least the first month of the season with “a nerve issue.”

The exact nature of the injury is believed to be “thoracic outlet syndrome,” the AP added, and Priester has been dealing with a wrist problem for much of the spring.

“I think in my head late April or May, but I certainly think I’m on the optimistic side — as a player, I want to be back as quick as possible,” Priester said. “Ultimately I’ll trust whatever the scheduling is there to make sure we do it right, so then we don’t run into anything else trying to rush it back.”

Jays’ Berrios to see Specialist

Jays pitcher Jose Berrios is dealing with inflammation in his right elbow, and he’ll be seeing a specialist next week as a result.

Berrios is meeting with Dr. Keith Meister on Tuesday and won’t be throwing until after he sees the doctor.

He’s already missed the World Baseball Classic due to the inflammation. He was set to pitch for Puerto Rico.
