The Colorado Rockies are still looking for their 10th win of the season as they finish up a three-game set against the Chicago Cubs. Last night they came close to that elusive second digit, but fell in the 11th inning 4-3. Their 9-46 record remains the worst in the Modern Era through 55 games, and their -174 run differential is the worst in MLB and second-worst in the Modern Era through 55 games behind the 2023 Oakland Athletics. They are 3-24 on the road — their worst road start in franchise history — and they are the first team since 1901 to lose 24 of their first 27 road games. And to cap it all off, they have also lost 21-straight series dating back to September 2024, which is also the longest series losing streak in MLB history, per Elias.
So… it’s a fun time to be Rockies fan, we all know!
But here’s at least what’s on deck tonight.
Tanner Gordon (1-1, 4.38 ERA) will take the mound for the Fighting Rockies. The Champaign, IL native is making his third MLB start of 2025 after being activated to take the place of an injured Chase Dollander. Gordon was acquired last summer from the Atlanta Braves alongside Victor Vodnik and has made 10 career starts. In his last outing against the New York Yankees on Friday, Gordon threw six innings and allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks. The Rockies won that game… can they do it again?
Gordon will face Cubbies’ veteran left-hander Matthew Boyd (4-2, 3.42 ERA). The 34-year-old signed a two-year deal with the Cubs in the offseason after having spent time with the Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Guardians. In his last outing against the Cincinnati Reds, Boyd threw four innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Neither of these pitchers have pitched against each other. Who will be victorious?
