SCOTTSDALE — Tony Vitello had to manage a game at Scottsdale Stadium on Friday afternoon, so he didn’t get a chance to watch Logan Webb pitch 4 2/3 shutout innings in a World Baseball Classic quarterfinal against Canada. But Vitello liked what he saw in the box score, especially the “pitch count” column.
Webb threw 71 pitches, just about what the Giants had mapped out. He’ll stay with Team USA for the semifinal against the Dominican Republic and will also watch the final game from the dugout if they advance, but he’s healthy and fully on track for Opening Day after making two WBC appearances.
Webb’s schedule was a bit thrown off by the WBC, so he’ll get a couple of extra days of rest this week. But he’ll pitch Friday at Scottsdale Stadium to get one last tuneup in before facing the New York Yankees on March 25 in the MLB season opener.
The Opening Day start will be the fifth straight for Webb, something only Juan Marichal has done since the team moved west. Tim Lincecum started four straight early in his career and Madison Bumgarner started five of six, with a late injury keeping him off the mound for the first game of the 2018 season.
Vitello had been hesitant to officially name Webb his Opening Day starter earlier in camp, saying he wanted every element of the spring to be competitive. But the Giants are now just a week away from their flight back to the Bay Area.
“We haven’t written anything down on paper, so it’s not like we couldn’t change that, but I don’t foresee any reason we would need to,” Vitello said of Opening Day. “He’s on pace to get his other outing in with us (Friday). He basically was as close to hitting the (pitch count) mark we wanted him to hit yesterday as possible and did it at a high level of competition.
“That was great, he’ll kind of finish that next step and then he’ll be ready for the season.”
The Giants expect Jung Hoo Lee back in Scottsdale this weekend after South Korea was eliminated, and he could be in Monday’s lineup alongside Harrison Bader, who returned after Pool Play. Heliot Ramos (Puerto Rico), Luis Arráez (Venezuela) and José Buttó (Venezuela) will be in action on Saturday.
