Last July the Chicago White Sox drafted high school shortstop Billy Carlson 10th overall. They provided him with a franchise record signing bonus for a high schooler, $6.235,900, and have had him working diligently with the organization in Arizona over the past five to six months.
With the 2026 season approaching, Carlson is set to make his highly anticipated professional debut. Even without having played a game yet, he’s already ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 73 overall prospect and No. 100 by ESPN, while being Chicago’s No.5 prospect.
Given his high draft status, significant financial investment, and strong recognition among evaluators, there will be immediate pressure for him to perform. Recently, his starting assignment for the 2026 season was announced.

Longtime White Sox beat reporter Scott Merkin recently reported that Carlson will report to Single-A Kannapolis to begin his professional career. The assignment is not surprising, as Carlson, who is 19 and will turn 20 this summer, will face many prospects around his age in the Carolina League.
When Carlson spoke about the news, he shared his excitement about the opportunity, saying, “All the guys hae been talking super highly of Kannapolis. So I’m super excited to goer to that tow nand help that team win.”
Carlson’s focus on helping the team win shows impressive maturity for a teenager. With the organization stocked with promising infield talent, building a group that bonds around winning will be important for the White Sox’s long-term outlook as they work to turn things around.
As for what Carlson will bring to Kannapolis individually, his defense is expected to stand out most to fans. Scouts have graded both his glove and arm at 70, and his speed and athleticism give him the potential to remain at shortstop long term. How his bat develops, however, will ultimately play a major role in determining his success as a player.
