AVANDATIMES.COM – The Texas Rangers have intensified their preparations for the upcoming season by trimming their spring training roster to 42 players on Sunday, making several strategic assignments to their minor league affiliates. With only 11 days remaining before the season opener against Philadelphia on March 26, the club is narrowing its focus to finalize the definitive 26-man roster.

Strategic Assignments and Waiver Clearances

Among the six players optioned to the minor leagues, catcher Willie MacIver has been assigned to Triple-A Round Rock, while right-handed pitcher Jose Corniell, who debuted in the majors late last season, will head to Double-A Frisco. Additionally, the Rangers sent infielders Jonah Bride and Cameron Cauley, along with right-hander Gavin Collyer, to the team’s minor league camp.

A notable transaction involved right-handed pitcher Alexis Díaz, who cleared waivers after being designated for assignment on Friday to accommodate left-handed reliever Jalen Beeks on the 40-man roster. Díaz, a former All-Star closer, remains in the organization despite a challenging spring where he posted a 43.20 ERA over 1.2 innings. AvandaTimes observed that this move allows the veteran more time to regain his form within the minor league system after surrendering eight earned runs in limited action.

Internal Competition for Bench Roles

The current camp roster consists of 32 players on the 40-man roster, nine non-roster invitees, and pitcher Jordan Montgomery, who is currently on the 60-day injured list following Tommy John surgery. One of the most discussed prospects this spring has been Cameron Cauley. Despite not having played above the Double-A level, Cauley impressed the coaching staff with a .289/.341/.500 slash line, including one home run and three RBIs, positioning himself as a primary depth option for the middle infield.

The battle for the final bench spots remains highly competitive. Non-roster invitees Andrew McCutchen and Tyler Wade are currently frontrunners for a place on the Opening Day squad. McCutchen, a former National League MVP, is working to prove his defensive versatility at the corner infield positions to complement his strong offensive start. Meanwhile, Wade has maintained a blistering .462 batting average throughout the spring. Their potential inclusion could impact the status of Ezequiel Duran, whose offensive production has fluctuated with sporadic playing time.
