The Minnesota Twins received concerning news during spring training after outfielder Austin Martin exited Monday’s Grapefruit League matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates following an injury sustained in the field.

Martin left the game after landing awkwardly while attempting a diving catch in right field, immediately raising concern among coaches and trainers. The play occurred during a routine defensive effort, but the impact caused the 26‑year‑old to leave the contest early as the team evaluated his condition on the sideline.

The Twins later provided clarity on the situation as reporters asked for an official update on Martin’s status and whether the injury could affect his availability moving forward in camp.

“Austin Martin exited today’s spring training game because of a concussion, the Twins announced,” reported Bobby Nightengale Jr. of The Minnesota Star Tribune.

While the team has not yet announced a timeline for Martin’s return, concussions are typically handled cautiously during spring training. The Twins will likely monitor his symptoms closely before determining when he can safely resume baseball activities.

Martin’s development has been closely watched since Minnesota acquired him in a major trade with the Toronto Blue Jays on July 30, 2021. In that deal, the Blue Jays sent Martin and pitching prospect Simeon Woods Richardson to the Twins in exchange for right‑handed starter Jose Berrios. At the time of the move, Martin was considered one of the top prospects in baseball, ranked No. 16 overall across the sport.

Originally selected fifth overall by Toronto in the 2020 MLB Draft, Martin arrived in Minnesota with high expectations. However, his progression to the major leagues included several challenges, including injuries, inconsistent offensive production and mechanical adjustments intended to add power to his swing. He also faced the added difficulty of transitioning defensively from the infield to the outfield.

Martin eventually made his MLB debut with the Twins in 2024 and showed promising flashes when healthy. Last season, he posted a .282 batting average with a .374 on‑base percentage and .740 OPS across 50 games. He also added one home run, seven RBIs and 11 stolen bases.

However, multiple hamstring strains limited him to those 50 appearances, preventing him from fully building on that performance across a full season.

Despite an underwhelming spring so far, Martin is still viewed as an important part of Minnesota’s long‑term outfield picture. With the Twins leaning into a younger roster moving forward, he is expected to receive opportunities this season to prove he can remain a key piece of the organization’s future moving forward.
