It is regional time for the 2025 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship Tournament.
A total of 64 teams will battle to be among the eight teams to qualify for the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
With East Texas being a hotbed for baseball talent, it is no surprise that there will be multiple East Texans competing in this year’s tournament.
Here is a look at East Texans — or players and coaches with East Texas ties — to watch for when the event begins on Friday:
For No. 1 Vanderbilt is junior left-handed pitcher JD Thompson (Rusk). Thompson gets the ball in the opening game of each conference series for the Commodores, so you will likely see Thompson start the Nashville Regional opener against Wright State or the second game against either Louisville or East Tennessee State.
Thompson is 5-5 with a 5.06 ERA with 110 strikeouts and 29 walks in 82 innings.
Vanderbilt sophomore catcher Mac Rose should be a familiar name for Tyler Legacy baseball fans as Rose is a former standout for Rockwall. Rose is hitting .250 with 25 33 hits, two home runs and 25 RBIs.
For Mississippi State is sophomore infielder Ace Reese (Canton). After transferring from Houston, Reese has made his mark for the Bulldogs. Reese is hitting .371 with 78 hits, 21 home runs, 18 doubles, one triple and 66 RBIs. He was named the SEC Newcomer of the Year.
Mississippi State is in the Tallahassee Regional with Florida State, Bethune-Cookman and Northeastern.
For Oklahoma is freshman outfielder Taylor Tatum (Longview), sophomore left-handed pitcher/outfielder Gavyn Jones (White Oak) and senior right-handed pitcher Reid Hensley (Lufkin).
Tatum hasn’t had an at-bat this season. He’s also on the Oklahoma football team, carrying the ball 56 times for 278 yards and three touchdowns and catching five passes for 41 yards and a touchdown in his first season with the Sooners.
Jones has had three at-bats, getting a hit in all three for a 1.000 batting average with three RBIs. As a pitcher, Jones is 1-0 with a 5.93 ERA with 26 strikeouts and six walks in 27.1 innings.
Hensley is 4-1 with one save and a 2.67 ERA with 34 strikeouts and 14 walks in 30.1 innings.
Oklahoma is in the Chapel Hill Regional with North Carolina, Holy Cross and Nebraska.
Rob Childress (Harmony) is an assistant coach for Nebraska. Childress was the head coach at Texas A&M from 2006-21.
UTSA has junior right-handed pitcher Sam Simmons (Panola College), who originally played for Manvel High School. He is 1-0 with a 7.77 ERA with 18 strikeouts and six walks in 22 innings.
Kansas State has junior infielder Sam Flores (Lufkin). Flores is hitting .277 with 26 hits, five doubles, three home runs, 17 RBIs and four stolen bases.
UTSA and Kansas State are in the Austin Regional with Texas and Houston Baptist.
Ole Miss has junior infielder Will Furniss (Nacogdoches). Furniss is hitting .287 with 52 hits, 10 home runs, five doubles and 40 RBIs. Ole Miss is hosting the Oxford Regional with Murray State, Georgia Tech and Western Kentucky.
Little Rock has junior right-handed pitcher Preston Davis (Redwater), junior right-handed pitcher Malcolm Brown (Redwater) and freshman Cade Martin (Pleasant Grove).
Davis is 1-2 with one save and a 1.69 ERA with 15 strikeouts and nine walks in 10.2 innings.
Brown is 1-3 with a 5.50 ERA with 31 strikeouts and 12 walks in 34.1 innings.
Martin is hitting .309 with 46 hits, five home runs, 11 doubles and 31 RBIs.
Dallas Baptist has sophomore infielder Tyler Ness (Tyler Junior College), who originally is from Turlock, California. Ness hasn’t had an at-bat this season.
Little Rock and Dallas Baptist are in the Baton Rouge Regional with LSU and Rhode Island.
Arkansas has freshman outfielder Brenton Clark (Pleasant Grove). Clark doesn’t have an at-bat this season. Arkansas is hosting the Fayetteville regional with North Dakota State, Kansas and Creighton.
