The Santa Rosa Junior College baseball team swept No. 18 Sierra in a three-game series last week but actually fell in the most recent state rankings.
The Bear Cubs defeated the Wolverines by scores of 6-4, 11-6 and 3-1, avenging their season-ending loss in the CCCAA NorCal Finals last season. However, the most recent California Community College Athletic Association poll dropped SRJC from No. 7 to No. 8 in the state.
In their 6-4 win in the opener, JT Summers hit a grand slam to punctuate at six-run fifth inning. In the 11-6 win, the Bear Cubs tallied 11 extra base hits, including three home runs. Cooper Wood doubled twice and homered for three RBIs, Trevor Schlafer and Brett Neidlinger both had a double and a home run with three RBIs apiece while Anane Wilson and Clay De Mars both had a pair of doubles. Myles Standish earned the win, striking out five with one run allowed over seven innings.
And in their 3-1 win in the series finale, Lucas Hermes tossed five innings of one-run ball while Schlafer, Chase Sutherland and RJ Johnson each had an RBI.
The Bear Cubs continued Big 8 action this week and fell 6-5 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to drop to 17-6 overall and 7-3 in the Big 8. They were set to host American River on Thursday with the series finale on the road on Saturday.
SRJC track and field
The SRJC men’s and women’s track and field teams had some solid showings at their Pat Ryan Invitational last week. The SRJC men placed eighth out of 14 teams and the women ninth out of 15 teams.
On the men’s side, Jared Hayes won the 800-meter race with a time of 1 minutes, 53.95 seconds. Gentle Edwin also placed fourth in the 100 with a time of 10.92 and seventh in the 200 with a time of 22.26.
Other highlights were courtesy of Charly Ramirez, who placed fourth in pole vault, clearing 13-feet, 09.25-inches, and Bodhi Finnerty, who placed fifth in the 5K in 16:17.58.
On the women’s side, Gracie Shaw had three top-10 finishes. She took second in the shot put (35-04), fifth in the javelin (92-08.5) and eighth in the discus (102-07.25). Isabella Barriga also placed fifth in 800 with a time of 2:31.76 and Ysabella Roscyl Galisanao took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15-06.5.
The Bear Cubs are back in action at San Mateo’s Bulldog Invitational on Friday.
SRJC women’s wrestling
The SRJC women’s wrestling team placed fifth out of 10 teams at the SRJC Invite last week.
Luana Stathopouls was an individual champion, placing first at 138 pounds. Jasmine Vo and Rawni Self both placed second in 145 and 235, respectively, while Charlotte Devlin took third in 131.
SRJC swimming and diving
The SRJC men placed fourth and women fifth at the Big 8 Invite last weekend.
On the men’s side, Phoenix Holt won two events, taking first in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.08) and 200 individual medley (2:03.25) while his brother Kai Holt placed first in the 500 freestyle (5:01.59).
For the women, Addison Klosevitz placed second in the 200 free (2:03.73), 200 butterfly (2:25.53) and 200 IM (1:06.15) while Natascha Deadman won the 100 breast (1:10.24).
SRJC beach volleyball
The SRJC beach volleyball split their Big 8 matches last week, falling 3-2 to American River and beating Sierra 4-1.
In the victory, wins went to No. 2 Amber Smart and Luka Armand (21-16, 21-11), No. 3 Jaiden Brooner and Kiana Walker (21-17, 21-9), No. 4 Stephanie Melendez and Nyejzniya Frohn (16-21, 21-14, 21-19) and No. 5 Lily Seidler and Issa Mcininch (21-14, 21-11).
SRJC softball
The SRJC softball team put up some crooked numbers in their doubleheader sweep of Diablo Valley on Saturday, winning both games via mercy rule by scores of 17-1 and 14-1. Those wins pushed the Bear Cubs winning streak to four game, all via mercy rule.
In the 17-1 win, Niueni Elisara doubled twice with a pair of RBIs while Mira Olvera and Mia Avila both doubled and drove in three runs. Brooke Myhre and Avila combined for the win in the circle, striking out one and allowing five hits in the game.
In the 14-1 win, Avila doubled again and drove in four runs while Olvera also doubled with three RBIs. Mya Gonzalez and Gia Hernandez combined to allow four hits with one strikeout in the circle.
The Bear Cubs began this week with a 3-2 loss at Sacramento City to drop to 13-10 overall and 5-6 in the Big 8.
