Samuel Basallo shines for the O’s in a high-flying clash with the Pirates on Thursday night in Sarasota

  • March 20, 2026

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – If you’re not familiar with Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo, perhaps it’s time you pay attention.

Basallo was on fire on Thursday night at Ed Smith Stadium. He crushed a first inning pitch from Cam Sanders on a 2-2 count to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

In the third inning, Basallo was right back at it against right-hander Mike Clevinger, this time with a man on base. The Orioles led 5-0 after three innings, thanks also to a two-run home run from Jhonkensey Noel in the second inning off of former Oriole Gregory Soto.

Baltimore would go on to win 5-2. The Orioles are next at the Yankees on Friday evening, while the Pirates turn their attention to the Braves on Friday evening as well.
