CLEVELAND, Ohio — Stan Coveleski, who went to the Hall of Fame by throwing a then-legal spitball for the Indians, had the perfect description for the game he played.
“The pressure never lets up,” said Coveleski. “Don’t matter what you did yesterday. That’s history. It’s tomorrow that counts. So you worry all the time. It never ends. Lord, baseball is a worrying thing.”
Coveleski pitched for the Indians from 1916 through 1924, and the Guardians players and the people who run the team are still worrying to this day.
Is Steven Kwan’s right wrist all right? What about Lane Thomas’ plantar fasciitis? Is anyone ever going to claim the wide-open right field job? Will Shane Bieber, David Fry, Chase DeLauter or C.J. Kayfus arrive in time from the minors to help catch the Tigers in the AL Central?
Then a game like Wednesday’s comes along. For seven innings the Dodgers looked unbeatable. The Guardians were just hanging around, waiting to get swept in the three-game series.
But Nolan Jones came off the bench to get three hits. Kolby Allard jogged out of the bullpen for a solid four-inning emergency start. The Guardians rallied for five runs in the eighth inning, featuring a tiebreaking three-run homer by Angel Martinez, and Emmanuel Clase pitched a perfect ninth inning to save a 7-4 win over the Dodgers and their $335 million payroll.
It was a moment to enjoy, to take a deep breath, before the worrying began again.
Breakfast and trivia
It’s an off-day for the Guardians. They just finished playing 12 games in 13 days, going 5-7. A late brunch is definitely in order. How about some waffles with pecans, bacon and tall, cold glass of OJ?
Now for the Guardians question of the day, how many potential base stealers has catcher Austin Hedges thrown out this season? Answer below.
Just one
Hey, Hoynsie: I went to the G’s game Wednesday. I was thinking of just how much better the Dodgers played than our guys. They hit with runners on base, made great plays in the field, and had their heads in the game. Then everything changed. Baseball can be a wonderful game. — Gregory Uhland.
Hey, Gregory: It is a great game, especially when your guys score five in the eighth inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by a player named Angel.
