SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — The Giants have made a late addition to their bullpen competition, announcing on Saturday evening that they’ve agreed with left-handed reliever Ryan Borucki on a one-year, major-league deal.
In a corresponding move, San Francisco has placed right-hander Hayden Birdsong, who will be undergoing Tommy John surgery next week, on the 60-day injured list.
Borucki, who turns 32 later this month, was released by the Chicago White Sox on Friday afternoon. During Cactus League play, Borucki tossed six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts for the White Sox.
A 15th-round pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2012 MLB draft, Borucki made his debut in ’18 and has pitched in each of the last major league seasons. Borucki owns a career 4.28 ERA and 4.34 FIP over 256 1/3 innings with the Blue Jays, Pittsburgh Pirates and Seattle Mariners. In ’25, Borucki had a 4.63 ERA and 4.25 FIP over 35 innings.
The addition of Borucki could potentially impact fellow left-hander Matt Gage, who is out of minor league options.
Gage, 33, enjoyed a career year in 2025 between his time with the Giants and Detroit Tigers, posting a 3.19 ERA and 2.75 FIP over 31 innings. He continued pitching well during spring training, posting a 2.84 ERA with nine strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. If Borucki and left-hander Erik Miller are in the mix, the Giants may not need a third lefty in their bullpen.
Borucki is the second left-handed reliever that the Giants have added in recent weeks, the other being Joey Lucchesi on a minor league deal. Lucchesi made three appearances during Cactus League play, allowing one run over three innings with two strikeouts.
The Giants’ bullpen depth took a hit when right-hander Joel Peguero sustained a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and left-hander Reiver Sanmartin suffered a right hip flexor strain that will keep him out up to three months.
