The Chicago White Sox have been looking towards the future with their prospects. While some prospects are getting prepared for the minor league season or possibly making the majors out of Spring Training, others have a bit more of a question mark right now. Chicago has one prospect who has not appeared in a Spring Training game and there has been an update on his status. Let’s take a closer look at who it is and what update has been provided.

Chicago White Sox pitcher David Sandlin gets a promising update
Chicago White Sox, David SandlinBoston Red Sox prospect David Sandlin answers questions inside the Red Sox clubhouse at Fenway Park during Red Sox Rookie Development Week in Boston earlier this year.

Paul Janish, the team’s Director of Player Development, spoke to the media and explained David Sandlin’s status. He would mention that Sandlin is throwing off the mound now, but there is no timetable for him to be available to pitch in a game. Sandlin has been dealing with back and right elbow issues throughout Spring Training, but it appears he is getting closer to a return. He expanded on this as well:

“We’ll probably take it easy with him in terms of the build-up. All signs are pointing up. I wouldn’t feel totally comfortable sharing the exact timeline just yet. He is doing well relative to a little speed bump.”

Sandlin is the 18th-ranked prospect in the White Sox organization and has not appeared in a Spring Training game this season. He had a rough stretch in Triple-A last season as he pitched as a reliever. In 15 games (one start), he was 4-2 with a 7.61 ERA and a .337 batting average against in 23.2 innings. Sandlin struggled with his command and needs to show significant improvement if he wants to be considered for a call-up this season. It will be intriguing to follow Sandlin’s status and see how he does when he is able to pitch in Triple-A Charlotte.
