Former Toronto Blue Jays catcher Reese McGuire has signed with the Chicago White Sox.

While Opening Day for the 2026 season is just about here, we are still seeing free agents find new homes. It is understandable, as many players end up hitting the market again during spring training if they do not end up making a team’s major league roster. This will only continue to be the case as we get closer to Opening Day.

Now, a former Toronto Blue Jays catcher has quickly found his new home after becoming a free agent again for a very short amount of time.

Former Blue Jays Catcher Reese McGuire Finds New Home With Chicago White Sox

On Saturday, former Blue Jays catcher Reese McGuire opted out of his minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. Now, just one day later, McGuire has already found his new home.

The Chicago White Sox have announced that they have signed McGuire to a one-year, $1.2 million contract for the 2026 season. With this, the 31-year-old will now provide the White Sox with another solid catcher to work with.

McGuire is a player who the White Sox already know well, too, as he played for them during the 2022 season. In 53 games with the White Sox during that campaign, he had zero home runs, 10 RBIs, 34 hits, and a .225 batting average. His time with the White Sox would end later that season when he was traded to the Boston Red Sox.

Now, after spending three seasons with the Red Sox and this past campaign with the Chicago Cubs, McGuire is once again a member of the White Sox. He should now serve as a solid veteran mentor for the club’s younger players and be a nice part of their depth in the process.

Looking Back on McGuire’s Time With the Blue Jays

While McGuire was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 14th overall pick of the 2013 MLB draft, he kicked off his major league career with the Blue Jays. The 6-foot catcher made his major league debut for the Blue Jays in 2018 and played for them until the 2021 season. In 141 games over that span with the Blue Jays, he had nine home runs, 25 doubles, 26 RBIs, and a .248 batting average.

McGuire saw his most major league action with the Blue Jays during the 2021 campaign. This is because he played in 78 games with the Blue Jays that season, where he had one home run, 10 RBIs, 15 doubles, and a .253 batting average.

McGuire’s time with the Blue Jays ended when he was traded to the White Sox on April 3, 2022, in exchange for catcher Zack Collins.

Since his time with the Blue Jays ended, McGuire has been a serviceable depth catcher and has gained a good amount of experience in the process. In 399 career major league games over eight seasons split between the Blue Jays, White Sox, Red Sox, and Cubs, he has 25 home runs, 106 RBIs, and a .248 batting average.

It will now be interesting to see how much of an impact McGuire can make during his second stint with the White Sox from here. The former Blue Jay has the potential to be a decent pickup for the White Sox.
