After six seasons with the San Francisco Giants, Wilmer Flores signed a new contract to play in the Mexican League.

After spending the last six years with the San Francisco Giants, Wilmer Flores has found a new team — and it’s not in Major League Baseball.

Toros de Tijuana of the Mexican Baseball League announced on Saturday, March 21, that Flores had signed with the club.

“With a solid track record in Major Leagues, a timely bat and defensive reliability, Wilmer Flores arrives at Toros de Tijuana,” the translated announcement on X said. “Welcome Wilmer, see you soon at Toros Mobil Park!”

Flores broke into Major League Baseball with the New York Mets in 2013 and remained there through the 2018 season. After one season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Flores signed with the Giants ahead of the 2020 season and remained in San Francisco through 2025.

On March 22, the Giants acknowledged Flores’ contributions to the team.

“6 seasons in Orange and Black,” the X post said. “Thank you, Wilmer.”

Flores was a popular player among Giants fans and players alike. In 2022, he received the team’s Willie Mac Award.

In six seasons with the Giants, Flores produced a .249/.321/.426 slash line, hitting 92 home runs over the six seasons. He hit a career high 23 home runs in 2023. Defensively, Flores moved around the diamond in San Francisco, playing every infield position other than shortstop for the Giants. In recent seasons, he was limited mostly to first base and designated hitter.

Flores Said he Wanted to Keep Playing

As the 2025 season concluded, it became clear that Flores was not likely to return to the Giants.

In January, Flores, then a free agent, made it known that he wasn’t thinking about retiring.

“My hope is to keep playing, I still have a lot to give and as we know, the offseason is moving a little slow, but you know, staying ready,” Flores said on MLB Network’s Hot Stove, H/T Will Simonds, NBC Sports Bay Area.

And signing in the Mexican League doesn’t necessarily mean that Flores has played his final MLB game.

While he did struggle later in the season, Flores slashed .241/.307/.379 and hit 16 home runs in 2025. One of those home runs came on Opening Day against the Cincinnati Reds, when Flores hit a three-run home run to break a 3-3 tie in the ninth inning.

It’s unlikely that Flores will ever be an everyday player again. That said, Flores showed enough pop in 2025 that if he performs well in the Mexican League, it’s certainly possible that an MLB team will look to add the 34-year-old.
