Area Prep Baseball Report for Tuesday, March 24
Prep baseball action Tuesday included was a showdown in District 9-2A between a pair of rivals.
Pope John Paul II got the job done in an excellent game, edging Northlake Christian 3-2 in Covington in a battle for first place.
Scoreless into the top of the fourth inning, the Jaguars scored two runs and added a run in the top of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
The Wolverines scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning but fell short.
Caden Amie was the winning pitcher. Amie went five innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Amie walked one and struck out nine. Taytem Miller got the save, pitching two scoreless, hitless innings with three walks and four strikeouts.
Pope John Paul (18-8, 3-0) has won five straight games. The Jaguars host French Settlement Wednesday with a chance to win the district title in outright fashion.
Northlake Christian (12-8, 2-2) hosts Country Day this evening at 6:30 p.m.
Country Day handled Ben Franklin 11-0 at Pontiff Playground.
The Cajuns scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and added four runs in the second inning.
Oliver Humphrey-Lambeth drove in four runs while Justin Drago had a hit and two RBI for Country Day. Henri Landry and Tanner Rouse each had two hits and an RBI. Allen Dietz and Cooper Vitrano each added a hit and an RBI.
Dietz got the win, allowing no runs on two hits in three innings. Dietz walked five and struck out eight.
Country Day (8-10) will play at Northlake Christian today.
Ben Franklin (4-14) travels to West Jefferson Wednesday.
Holy Cross scored an impressive 6-3 win over Teurlings Catholic at Tiger Park.
Roux Guerra gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a 2-run double and Holy Cross would not relinquish the lead.
Ian Calato had two hits and drove in a run while Luke Appe had an RBI.
Colin Tallet pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits.
Holy Cross (16-7) hosts Karr today at 6:30 p.m. in District 9-5A play.
Archbishop Rummel blanked De La Salle 10-0 in a game shortened to four and a half innings by the mercy rule.
Brennen Ramon starred for the Raiders, pitching a one-hitter. Ramon walked five and struck out eight.
Freshman star Beau Stevens homered for Rummel while Northwestern State commit Ian Smith went 4 for 4, including a double with an RBI. Joel Morange drove in three runs, Ben Heard had a 2-run single while Tyler Fourmaux and Brody Giglio each drove in a run.
Karson Robicheaux took the loss for De La Salle. Raleigh Nelson had the lone hit, a single in the top of the fifth inning.
Rummel (17-6) returns to District 9-5A play today against Warren Easton at 4 p.m. at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
De La Salle (4-20) returns to District 10-3A play today against Landry at 4:30 p.m.
