The Diamondbacks made a late change to their lineup for the final game of spring training, the exhibition against Cleveland on Tuesday, March 24 at Chase Field.

Ketel Marte was scratched from second base and the leadoff spot, with Ildemaro Vargas taking his place. The rest of the lineup remained unchanged.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Marte was scratched due to soreness. Marte is expected to be in the lineup on Thursday, March 26, when the Diamondbacks play the Los Angeles Dodgers in L.A. on Opening Day.

“Just overall lower leg soreness, fatigue type of thing, that’s what I categorize it as,” Lovullo said. “No issue for Thursday.”

In other injury news, catcher Adrian Del Castillo (calf) will likely start the season on the injured list and start a rehab program. Outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is close to playing in live games in which he hits and runs the bases as his surgically repaired knee improves.

Tawa, Vargas to open season in majors

A year ago at his time, Vargas and Tim Tawa didn’t make the major league roster for Opening Day, both starting in Triple-A Reno. Tawa would make his major-league debut in early April in Washington, and Vargas appeared in 38 major league games for Arizona later in the season.

This year, however, the two will be on the 26-man Opening Day roster.

Lovullo said Vargas will be the utility backup at second base, shortstop and third base. Tawa will play infield and outfield.

“That versatility played into the decisions that we made to help them make this team, and then on top of that, they had a good spring,” Lovullo said.
