The UMass Lowell baseball team had little time to savor an early three-run lead.
After surging ahead in the top of the second, the River Hawks watched as Merrimack College scored seven times in the bottom half of the inning to coast to an 11-4 victory over the visiting River Hawks on Tuesday afternoon.
Merrimack put the game away with a four-run fifth. The Warriors collected 11 hits and held UML to four hits.
Leading UML’s hitting attack were right fielder Carlos Martinez (1-for-2), second baseman Jorge Burgos (1-for-1, run), designated hitter Scott Donahue (1-for-3, 2 RBI, double) and shortstop Tyler McKillop (1-for-2, run, double).
Tyler Dunlea allowed seven runs, although only two were earned, in two innings on the mound. The third UML pitcher was freshman Seamus Scott, a Lowell native and former Lowell Catholic High School star. He pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.
UML (8-12), which has lost three straight, will host Northeastern in its home opener Wednesday (4 p.m.) at LeLacheur Park.

UMass Lowell sophomore Thyanais Santiago (Methuen) was named America East Player of the Week following standout performances n the River Hawks’ three-game sweep of Maine, highlighted by a clutch three-run home run in Friday’s 12–11 comeback win.
Santiago delivered in key moments across all three games, finishing the weekend hitting .429 (3-for-7) with a team-high seven RBI, while adding a double, five runs scored and three walks. She also contributed in Saturday’s doubleheader, including a game-tying RBI double in a 5–1 victory as Lowell completed the sweep.
The award marks the first America East weekly honor of Santiago’s career. In other news, the River Hawks’ game at UMass, originally scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed due to field conditions. A makeup date has not been announced.
