With Jeremy Pena’s contract about to run out in two seasons, the Astros might want to think about locking him up soon. However, with Scott Boras as his agent, his price could be driven up dramatically.

However, FanSided’s Jake Elman predicts that Boras actually won’t be a problem, and believes Pena will sign an extension with Houston, as long as the offer is fair.

“Peña has quietly been among the sport’s top shortstops in recent years, and he took a long-awaited next step offensively last year. After averaging a .707 OPS in his first three seasons, Peña posted an .840 OPS and 5.6 bWAR over nearly 550 plate appearances. With Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa in the back half of their careers, Peña and Yordan Alvarez have solidified their place as the next generation of Astros stars — assuming, of course, that Houston keeps Peña around long-term. I’m not sure why the Astros wouldn’t want to re-sign Peña if he’s open to staying in Houston. He turns 29 in September and won’t hit free agency until 2028, so I suggest that he cash in if the Astros give him the opportunity. It’s worth noting that Pena was reportedly in deep discussions about a contract extension before switching to Boras last year,” Elman wrote.

This past season, Pena slashed .304/.363/.477/.840 with 30 doubles, 17 home runs, 62 RBI, and 20 stolen bases in 126 games played. He also earned his first All-Star nod, to go along with his Gold Glove, ALCS MVP, and World Series MVP hardware.

Basically, Pena has been the reason for a lot of Houston’s success since 2022. If they can retain his talent, he can be the position player that they build around for years to come.

Hopefully the Astros can scale the wall known as Boras to extend their homegrown talent ASAP, and hopefully don’t get his price inflated while they do it.
