Week 2 is the first full week of the MLB season. When crafting your fantasy baseball lineups, it’s important to know the intricacies of the schedule. Let’s highlight which teams and players benefit from their scheduled opponents, as well as discuss those who receive a downgrade based on their matchups.
MLB Teams With The Most Week 2 Games
The following teams will all play seven games each during the week, giving an advantage in fantasy baseball to the hitters on those rosters.
Arizona Diamondbacks: 3 games vs. DET, 4 games vs. ATL
Atlanta Braves: 3 games vs. ATH, 4 games at ARI
New York Mets: 3 games vs. STL, 4 games at SF
San Francisco Giants: 3 games at SD, 4 games vs. NYM
MLB Teams With The Fewest Week 2 Games
While there are often weeks in which teams will play just five games, that is not the case for Week 2. Outside of the four teams listed above, every other team is scheduled to play six games each.
3 Fantasy Baseball Winners For Week 21. Ronald Acuña Jr., Atlanta Braves
Injuries have taken their toll on Acuña, limiting him to a total of 144 games the last two seasons, Despite being held to 95 games last year, he launched 21 home runs to go along with his .290 batting average and .403 wOBA. Not only are the Braves one of the four teams that will play seven games, but the three-game series against the Athletics could help Acuña get off on the right foot. They are projected to start Aaron Civale, Luis Severino, and Jorge Lopez, who all had an ERA over 4.00 and a xFIP of at least 4.40 last year.
2. Geraldo Perdomo, Arizona Diamondbacks
Perdomo is coming off a breakout campaign in which he produced 20 home runs, 100 RBI, and 98 runs scored. He also hit .290 with a .370 wOBA. All seven of his games in Week 2 will be at home, where he hit .325 with a .397 wOBA last year. On the road, he hit .256 with a .343 wOBA.
3. Kyle Schwarber, Philadelphia Phillies
Although the Phillies don’t play seven games, they have the best matchups for the week. They begin with three games against the Nationals, who are projected to have one of the worst records in baseball. They have some promising hitters, but their starting rotation is a mess and the bullpen behind them has plenty of question marks. Following that series, the Phillies will play three games in hitter-friendly Coors Field versus the Rockies. Schwarber, who slugged 56 home runs last year, could carry fantasy lineups.
3 Fantasy Baseball Losers For Week 21. Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels
Trout is not the player that he was during his prime. Injuries have played a big role in his decline. Over 130 games last year, he hit just .232 with a .206 ISO that was his lowest mark since he debuted by playing 40 games in 2011. The Angels begin the week with three games against the Cubs and will face two of their better pitchers in Matthew Boyd and Edward Cabrera in the series. Following that is three games versus a Mariners team that has among the best pitching staffs in the league. Trout could get off to a slow start.
2. Alec Burleson, St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals play three games at home against the Mets, followed by three games on the road versus the Tigers. In addition to being projected to face Mets prized offseason acquisition Freddy Peralta, Burleson is lined up to face the Astros’ big addition in Framber Valdez. The series with the Tigers will also be played in Detroit’s pitcher-friendly park. Although he is one of the centerpieces of the Cardinals’ lineup, it could be an ugly first full week for Burleson.
3. Trevor Larnach, Minnesota Twins
Larnach has back-to-back seasons with at least 15 home runs and should see the majority of his at bats against right-handed pitchers this season. He posted a .759 OPS against them last year, compared to being held to a .608 OPS by lefties. The problem for Week 2 is that Larnach is projected to face four left-handed starters across six games versus the Royals and Rays. He might not be in the lineup much.
