Houston’s big splash in the offseason was the signing of Japanese right-hander Tatsuya Imai, while fellow righty Mike Burrows earned the No. 2 spot in the rotation with a strong spring after coming over in a trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates. But the Astros lost left-hander Framber Valdez in free agency and traded Mauricio Dubon, the utility Gold Glove winner last season, to the Atlanta Braves for shortstop Nick Allen. With shortstop Jeremy Pena recovering from a fractured finger, Carlos Correa slides over from third base to open the season, and Isaac Paredes goes back to third base.

The Angels added outfielder Josh Lowe in a three-team trade from the Tampa Bay Rays to replace Taylor Ward, dealt to the Baltimore Orioles for right-hander Grayson Rodriguez. Mike Trout was healthier than he’s been in years in 2025 and returns to center field in a switch with slugger Jo Adell, who led the club with 37 homers. Trout played in 130 games but slashed just .232/.359/.439 with 26 bombs, and Rodriguez opens the season on the injured list with what new manager Kurt Suzuki called a “dead arm.”

Right-hander Hunter Brown draws the Opening Day assignment for the Astros after putting up a 2.43 ERA and 1.025 WHIP with 206 strikeouts in 185.1 innings last season. Los Angeles goes with right-hander Jose Soriano, who started 31 games with a 4.26 ERA and 1.396 WHIP while allowing only 12 home runs in 169 innings.
