This year’s “Iron Bowl of Baseball” will feature the toughest opponent to date this season for coach Rob Vaughn’s Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama (19-7 overall, 3-3 SEC), ranked No. 23 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, will face an Auburn Tigers (20-4, 4-2) team that’s ranked No. 5 and has one of the best pitching staffs in the country.
Auburn enters this year’s series with a combined 2.40 ERA in 210 innings. That ranks second in the nation behind the USC Trojans‘ 2.22 mark. The Tigers’ strikeout-to-walk ratio is best in the country, and Auburn has three weekend starters that have stood out in SEC play this season: left-handers Jake Marciano (3-0, 1.00 ERA) and Jackson Sanders (2-1, 3.66), and right-hander Alex Petrovic (4-1, 2.97). The Tigers swept Missouri in their conference opener before dropping two of three to the No. 2 Texas Longhorns last week at Plainsman Park.
Centerfielder Bristol Carter (.388/.500/.507) and shortstop Brandon McCraine (.384/.505/.507) lead Auburn at the plate. After being swept at Kentucky to open SEC play, Alabama is coming off a three-game sweep of the Florida Gators at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The sweep included a 6-0 win on Friday night behind Tyler Fay’s complete-game no-hitter. Fay (4-2, 4.06 ERA) struck out 13 and allowed just two men to reach base. Zane Adams (4-1, 4.11) allowed two runs in six innings in Saturday’s 8-4 win over the Gators, and the Crimson Tide completed the sweep Sunday behind 14 runs that included Justin Lebron’s team-best 11th home run.
Alabama is batting .269 as a team, which ranks second from last in the SEC. The Crimson Tide have clubbed 34 home runs and 45 doubles. They’ve outscored opponents, 198-113, this season. Alabama pitchers, led by freshman starter Myles Upchurch (3-2, 3.97), have a 3.86 ERA and 233 strikeouts to 84 walks in 221 1/3 innings. Auburn is batting .303, the fourth-best mark in the SEC, with 25 home runs and 39 doubles. The Tigers have outscored their opponents, 174-79.
