Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Joe Ryan gave the Minnesota Twins everything they could have asked for in an Opening Day starter, and then some.

The right-hander turned in a masterful five-and-a-third innings of shutout ball, scattering just one hit while punching out seven Baltimore batters. When he handed the ball to the bullpen, Minnesota was still very much in the game.

But the lead that never came couldn’t survive the seventh inning. Reliever Kody Funderburk surrendered the go-ahead run in the bottom of the frame, and the Orioles held on to hand the Twins a 2–1 defeat to open the 2026 season at Camden Yards.

Funderburk was charged with the loss, absorbing the blow after Ryan had kept Baltimore’s lineup in check through the early innings. Minnesota managed to push across a single run on offense, but it wasn’t enough to support a pitching performance that, on most nights, would be more than adequate to earn a win.

The Twins, now 0–1 on the young season, won’t have to wait long for redemption. Minnesota returns to action Friday afternoon with Game 2 of the series against Baltimore, also at Camden Yards.
