History

Jersey City, NJ – The University of Mount Saint Vincent competed in their second game in as many days and earned their fourth win of the season with a 10-6 victory over New Jersey City University. The result pushed UMSV to 4-11 on the season, ahead of a Skyline Conference double header taking place over the weekend.

The Dolphins got things going early, with Stephen Marinez driving home Zach Turko with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Marinez once again plated a run, this time John Anthony Spanoudakis in the third inning on a fielder’s choice, pushing UMSV’s lead to 2-0.

NJCU would respond over the next two innings, with the home team scoring five runs of their own to make it a 5-2 ballgame. The Dolphins, however, would answer themselves, first with Spanoudakis cutting the deficit to two runs with a sacrifice fly of his own. Kyle Brindisi continued the hot start to his UMSV career with a fifth inning RBI double to tie the game at the midway point.

Will Granata would drive in a pair of runs when the Dolphins batted around in the sixth, while both Marinez and Spanoudakis put the icing on the cake with late game RBI as well.

Turko led the way for the Dolphins, reaching base five times with three hits and two walks, while Marinez and Spanoudakis had a team-best three RBI apiece. Freshman Michael Akalski had two hits as well.

The Dolphins pitching staff put together a strong performance to ensure the victory. Joseph Santos earned the start and struck out four across the first three innings while allowing no earned runs. Michael Iocco had four strong middle innings to keep the Gothic Knights in check before Tristen Leone closed the door with a clean ninth inning.

The Dolphins are set to take on Farmingdale State College on Sunday as they look to climb the conference standings.
