The Dumas Demonette softball team remains unscathed in district play with a 6-2 win over the Canyon Lady Eagles Thursday, Mar. 19. They then defeated the West Plains Lady Wolves 3-0 Saturday, Mar. 21. On Tuesday, Mar. 24 they defeated the Pampa Lady Harvesters 14-4 to remain perfect in district 4-4A. They are currently ranked number one in the state in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Poll.
Dumas wasted no time getting on the board as Fierro went yard as the third batter in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 lead over Canyon. After Star Cortes and the Demonette defense shut down the Lady Eagles at the plate in the bottom of the inning, Yaritza Vargas added to the lead with a single in the top of the second inning that drove in two runs for a 3-0 lead.
The game turned into a pitching dual as both arms from the circle had quick outings, until the top of the fifth inning when Dumas hurler Cortes hit a two-run homer over left field to give the Demonettes a 5-0 lead.Â
Canyon got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a double to trail 5-1. A couple of batters later, the Eagles scored on an error to trail 5-2. Dumas scored their final run in the top of the seventh with a double by Madi Zubia for the 6-2 victory.
Cortes finished the afternoon going al seven innings allowing six hits, and three strikeouts and, two runs.
The Demonettes will be back in action when they host the West Plains Lady Wolves Saturday, Mar. 21 at 12 p.m.
The Demonettes entered the game Saturday afternoon looking to take sole possession of the first place in district 4-4A after West Plains fell to Randall Tuesday evening.
It was a defensive battle for most of the game as pitchers Jaylen Kaps of West Plains and Cortes both had great performances from the circle. The Demonettes got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Madi Zubia hit a solo home run over left field for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later Mia Fry added to the lead and the home run total with a solo shot of her own to give Dumas a 2-0 lead going into the fifth inning,
The Demonettes’ defense only gave up one hit in the fifth inning, followed by another solo home run by Aaliyah Chairez for the 3-0 lead.
The Demonettes ended the first part of district play undefeated with the 14-4 victory. Dumas got on the board early with a double by Fierro. Two batters later, Madi Zubia singled for another run, followed by another single by Lisbeth Quiroz. Mia fry followed with a double to give the Demonettes a 4-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the Demonettes added to their lead with a stolen run at home by Natalee Keen in the top of the third for a score of 5-0. The Lady Harvesters cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring four runs to trail 5-4.
Dumas extended its lead in the top of the sixth with back-to-back doubles by Chairez and Fierro for a score of 7-4. The Demonettes put the game away in the top of the seventh with singles by Yairtza Vargas and Fierro, followed by scoring on an error by Pampa by Cortes. Quiroz hit the final single for a run to give the Demonettes the 14-4 victory and to end the first half of district undefeated. They have outscored their district opponents 99-7.Â
The Demonettes currently sit at 22-2-1 overall and 7-0 in district play. They will be back I action when they visit the Hereford Lady Whitefaces Friday, Mar. 27 at 4:30 p.m.
