You can’t win ’em all if you don’t win the first one.

Well, the Cleveland Guardians delivered in the opening game of the 2026 MLB season, defeating the Seattle Mariners 6-4 in Seattle. It was a coming-out party for rookie outfielder Chase DeLauter, who went 3-for-5 and launched two home runs in the win.

Opening Day starter Tanner Bibee allowed three home runs of his own, but all three were solo shots for the Mariners, and that’s all they’d muster offensively off the righty. Bibee went five innings allowing four hits, three runs and two walks while striking out seven in a steady season debut before leaving with shoulder inflammation.

Cleveland’s bullpen allowed just one additional run in four innings of work in the win.

On the bump for the Guardians following Bibee will be right-hander Gavin Williams.

The 6-foot-6, 26-year-old started 31 games for Cleveland a season ago. He finished with a 12-5 record to accompany a 3.06 ERA. He struck out 173 batters in 167.2 innings, but often had trouble with control. He walked a league-high 83 hitters a season ago, so he’ll look to improve his command to build off what he established a season ago in what was otherwise viewed as the best year of his young career.

For the Mariners, George Kirby will take the mound for his first start of 2026. Kirby is the opposite end of the coin when compared to Williams, as he walked just 29 batters a season ago — which was a career-high. He finished the 2025 campaign with career worst 4.21 ERA to go with a 10-8 record over the course of 23 starts.
