Alec Bohm of the Philadelphia Phillies is suing his parents, alleging they misused millions of dollars of their son’s money to pay for their own expenses.

Bohm filed a lawsuit in Philadelphia on Wednesday, March 25, accusing his parents, Daniel and Lisa Bohm, of moving large amounts of his money into separate accounts they were managing for him, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

The third baseman claims his parents devised a scheme in 2018 and “convinced Alex to entrust them with management of his personal and financial affairs, claiming that third-party advisors would invariably take advantage of Alex as he began his career in Major League Baseball,” the documents said.

Daniel and Lisa allegedly “misled” their son to “believe that they possessed the requisite knowledge, skills, and experience to provide the same quality of services as any third-party advisor without any cost to Alec,” the documents stated.

The athlete’s parents allegedly sought to “freeze” their son out of four of his accounts, according to the documents.

Bohm claims his parents used some of his funds “to pay their own personal expenses,” according to the filing.

Bohm began reviewing his personal finances in January, which led him to ask his parents to provide him with “certain documentation to Alec to allow him to verify their representations,” the documents said.

The documents alleged that Daniel and Lisa “refused to provide any of the limited documentation that Alec sought, which included, for example, electronic login information, account statements, tax instruments, and other readily accessible documentation, opting instead to engage counsel.”

Daniel and Lisa have denied any wrongdoing and said they are “deeply saddened by the allegations” in a statement from their lawyer Robert Eckard to ESPN.

“Mr. and Mrs. Bohm love their son very much and have always acted in his best interests, both personally and professionally, and still do so to this day,” Eckard said, telling the outlet that the Phillies star has had full access to his accounts and that his parents will “aggressively” defend themselves.

Bohm was asked about the lawsuit after the Phillies’ game on Thursday, March 26, but declined to comment on the matter.

“I’m not going to address any personal matters right now,” he said, per ESPN.
