The rich got richer over the winter as Los Angeles added outfielder Kyle Tucker and reliever Edwin Diaz in free agency. Shohei Ohtani claimed his second straight National League Most Valuable Player award after slugging 55 home runs, while Tucker slots into right field, with Teoscar Hernandez shifting to left. Ohtani also made 14 starts with a 2.87 ERA and 1.043 WHIP in 47 innings and looks to take on a bigger role in the rotation this season. Left-hander Blake Snell opens the season on the injured list after experiencing arm fatigue during the offseason.
Arizona re-signed free agent right-hander Zac Gallen and brought back Merrill Kelly to the rotation after trading him to the Texas Rangers at the deadline last season, though Kelly opens the season on the IL with a balky back. They added Nolan Arenado in a trade from the St. Louis Cardinals and signed veteran first baseman Carlos Santana as well. After trade rumors swirled around star second baseman Ketel Marte for much of the offseason, the Diamondbacks brought him back to pair with Geraldo Perdomo in the middle infield.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto gets the start for the Dodgers on Friday night after throwing two complete games in the playoffs. He made 30 starts last season with a 2.49 ERA and 0.990 WHIP, striking out 201 in 173.2 innings. Gallen gets the opening-night call for the Diamondbacks coming off the worst season of his career, which included a 4.83 ERA and 1.260 WHIP in 33 starts and 192 innings.
