No. 15 Coastal Carolina used a pair of middle-inning surges and timely hitting to defeat Marshall 11-9 on Friday night at Jack Cook Field.
The Chanticleers (18-7, 7-0 Sun Belt) broke open a tight game with a four-run third inning and added three more in the fourth to take control early. Coastal later tacked on a key insurance push with three runs in the eighth to hold off a late Marshall rally.
Third baseman Walker Mitchell led the Chants at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks, delivering in RBI situations. Domenico Tozzi added a big night as well, finishing 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Blake Barthol chipped in two hits and two RBIs, while Dean Mihos and Rex Watson also drove in a pair of runs.
Coastal Carolina finished with 11 runs on 11 hits and drew eight walks, capitalizing on traffic throughout the night, collecting six two-out RBIs.
On the mound, the Chanticleers used a bullpen-by-committee approach after starter Luke Jones allowed five runs over three innings. Freshman Daniel Parker earned the win in relief, working 2.0 innings while allowing just one run. Ryan Lynch closed the door, striking out two over the final 1.1 innings to secure the save.
Game two of the series will commence Saturday at 4 p.m.
