New York roughed up reigning National League Cy Young Award Paul Skenes in a five-run first inning and kept applying pressure in an 11-7 victory on Thursday. Freddy Peralta shook off two home runs in a rocky Mets debut, working five innings and allowing four runs with seven strikeouts to get the win, while rookie Carson Benge and Francisco Alvarez clubbed back-to-back home runs in the sixth. Brett Baty drove in three runs with a bases-loaded triple in the first.

Skenes was undone by a pair of fielding miscues by center fielder Oneil Cruz, both scored as hits, and left after allowing five runs while recording only two outs. Brandon Lowe homered twice off Peralta in his Pittsburgh debut and fellow newcomer Ryan O’Hearn also went deep in the loss for the Pirates. Nick Golzales drove in two runs as well.

Left-hander David Peterson, a first-time All-Star in 2025, gets the start for the Mets on Saturday. He made 30 starts and worked 168.2 innings, both career highs, with a 4.22 ERA and 1.370 WHIP. Right-hander Mitch Keller pitched to a 4.19 ERA and 1.259 WHIP in 32 starts and 176.1 innings for the Pirates last season and takes the ball on Saturday.
