But then the Cleveland Guardians ace walked off a bit to the side after his final warmup pitch. He got a sheepish smile on his face. He knew something was a little off.
The training staff, along with manager Stephen Vogt and pitching coach Carl Willis, came out to check on Bibee.
After a short conversation, they pointed out to the bullpen. Bibee’s night was done.

He had gone five innings and allowed three runs, but that was of little concern at this point. Bibee’s health was.
The broadcasters on the Cleveland broadcast almost immediately pointed out that Bibee has dealt with cramps in the past, but it’s not clear whether that’s what this was.

The Guardians brought in relief pitcher Connor Brogdon, a big right-hander, earlier than planned upon.
Bibee threw 78 pitches before feeling something during his warmups in the sixth inning.
There will likely be more information after the game, but it’s not ideal. Bibee is expected to be key to the Guardians’ pitching plans this season.
But in start number one, a big question mark has popped up right away. Cleveland fans, many who may have gone to bed before this game ended with its West Coast start time, will wake up hoping that Bibee isn’t feeling too bad.
